Vaughn Makes Statement With 3 Homers

Fresh from beating a drunken-driving charge, Mo Vaughn returned to the lineup in Winter Haven, Fla., and hit three home runs--including a grand slam--and drove in six runs to lead the Red Sox to a 12-9 victory over the Cleveland Indians. Said Vaughn, who will be eligible for free agency after the World Series: “I have a message for all general managers. The price just goes up every day.” . . . Unable to agree on contracts, the New York Yankees renewed the deals of shortstop Derek Jeter, the 1996 American League rookie of the year, and reliever Mariano Rivera for $750,000 each. Last season, Jeter hit .290 with 10 homers and 70 runs batted in. Rivera was 6-4 with 43 saves and a 1.89 earned-run average. They each made $550,000. . . . Hawken Ballard, the 5-year-old boy who was hit in the face by an overthrow by Pittsburgh shortstop Lou Collier at an exhibition game at Lakeland, Fla., Wednesday, was moved out of the intensive-care unit at All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla., after two hours of surgery late Wednesday night. Ballard sustained a fractured bone behind his eyebrow, and the impact also caused a blood clot and a tear in the lining covering the brain, Ann Miller of All Children’s said.
