5.3 Quake Rattles Inyo County

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck Thursday night 17 miles east of Little Lake in Inyo County, a Caltech seismologist said.

The 9:47 p.m. quake was followed by a 4.1-magnitude aftershock four minutes later. The temblors struck in the largely rural area along Interstate 395, just north of the Kern County line. No damages or injuries were reported. Seismologist Egill Hauksson said the 4.1-magnitude shaker was the strongest of a flurry of aftershocks of the initial quake.

The quakes occurred within the Navy’s vast China Lake Weapons Center.
