LONG BEACH STATE SOFTBALL

* County connections: Kristy Bonwell of Fullerton College, Jaclyn Fredrickson of La Quinta, Traci Hensel of Kennedy, Stacy Silva of Cypress and Nicola Walsh of Rosary.

* Worth noting: Long Beach is 12-4 and ranked 13th in the nation. Walsh, the left fielder, started every game last season, including two at shortstop. Fredrickson, a freshman third baseman, who was the Garden Grove League most valuable player last season at La Quinta. Bonwell and Hensel are expected to help solidify Long Beach’s pitching staff, although Bonwell will also play in the outfield. Hensel, off to a 7-1 start, pitched a no-hitter Saturday in a victory over Virginia.

* Appearing locally: Long Beach plays at Cal State Fullerton May 6.

SAN JOSE STATE BASEBALL

* County connections: Brian Greene of Cypress College, Ryan McDermott of Laguna Hills and Saddleback College, Mike Wright of Cal State Fullerton, Ryan Brucker of Irvine and Jon Lauderdale of Tustin and Saddleback College.

* Worth noting: Left fielder Lauderdale is hitting .382 with a team-leading five home runs. McDermott is 2-1 and picked up a save Friday for San Jose State (10-6).

UCLA BASEBALL

* County connections: Garrett Atkins of University, Dan Keller of Fountain Valley, Brett Nista of Laguna Hills, Ryan Reightley of Santa Margarita and Eric Valent of Canyon.

* Worth noting: Atkins hit a three-run homer Sunday to help UCLA (8-10) defeat USC, 12-7. Atkins is hitting .371 with two homers. Valent, a junior center fielder who hit 27 home runs last season for the Bruins, has six so far this year. Reightley has no record in four starts.
