Negotiator Roper Named Superintendent

Trustees have appointed a veteran administrator to head the Huntington Beach Union High School District, four days after they ousted Supt. Ronald Bennett for what was described as a difference in management philosophy.
Susan Roper, the board’s chief negotiator with the district’s labor unions, received an immediate contract effective through June 30. She has worked for the past 10 years as assistant superintendent for personnel and employee relations.
Roper, hired unanimously Saturday during a special board meeting, will earn $120,000 a year. The district has 13,900 students from grades nine to 12.
Bennett took the district’s helm less than two years ago. Both Bennett and the board said the termination of his four-year contract was mutual.
