Santa Ana Calvary Chapel had two champions and advanced seven of 11 wrestlers entered in Saturday’s Southern Section Masters wrestling meet at Fountain Valley High to next week’s state finals in Stockton.
The top eight finishers from each weight class advanced.
“I’m extremely proud of these kids. They really came through for us today,” said Calvary Chapel Coach John Azevedo. “Especially [Mike] Bigrigg. That was a big win for us.”
Mike Bigrigg defeated Cristobal Gonzales of Ventura, 5-4, in the 189-pound match. The win was that much more impressive since Gonzales beat the Calvary Chapel senior last week in the Division I Southern Section finals.
Adam Bones was the other Calvary Chapel wrestler who won a title. A sophomore, Bones won his 112-pound match, beating Joe Lopez of Riverside Norte Vista, 4-2
Temecula Valley’s Ryan Kane defeated Calvary Chapel’s Ben Nakamura for the 145-pound title, 3-2.
Top-seeded Josh Saul of Calvary Chapel was narrowly defeated by Division II champion Philip Alejandrino of Chino, 6-4 in the 215 pound championship match.
“Those two [Saul and Alejandrino] are the two best wrestlers in the state. I’m sure they’ll meet again next week,” Azevedo said.
Jeff Anderson of Bellflower St. John Bosco won the 160-pound division.
