Fuhr Out Four Weeks

Associated Press

St. Louis Blues goalie Grant Fuhr will sit out at least four weeks after an operation Saturday for torn cartilage in his right knee.

Fuhr, 35, re-injured his knee while sliding to stop a shot by Tony Granato during Thursday’s 3-1 loss to the San Jose Sharks. He is expected to make a complete recovery.

“It’s the best of a bad situation,” Fuhr said. “It could have been a lot worse.”

It’s the same knee that was injured when Nick Kypreos jumped on him in Game 2 of the first-round playoff series against Toronto in April 1996. That time, Fuhr tore ligaments. He missed the rest of the playoffs but returned to play 73 games last season after extensive rehab.

Fuhr has put up some of the best numbers of his career since returning after the injury. Last season, he won 33 games and recorded a 2.72 goals-against average. He has lowered it to 2.44 this season.

With Fuhr out, Jamie McLennan will start and rookie Rich Parent will back him up.
