THE GRAMMYS

Last week’s up-front pictorial spread on the ’98 Grammys was sorely lacking. For a newspaper that originates in a city in which most of its population, I hear, is Latino, I thought it was a real slap in the face of Latin music not to have included more coverage about the Latin categories and nominees. You missed a golden opportunity to elevate this music to the well-deserved status of the other categories you covered so well.
With Latin music being the rage all over Europe and much of the world, I wonder when those of us north of the border will get a clue?

Much of Robert Hilburn’s Radiohead article focused on the fact that Thom Yorke is, in fact, a well-adjusted young man, contrary to what the tone of his music might suggest to many listeners. That point may have been lost because of the inclusion of an advertisement for a research institute that appeared on the last page of the piece. Its first lines read “Depressed? Unhappy? Low Self Esteem, Loss of Enjoyment, Low Energy?”
Nonetheless, thanks for the very enjoyable article about an outstanding band.

Is NARAS President Michael Greene really going to sit there and tell us that if, for example, music heavyweights Garth Brooks, Mariah Carey, the Rolling Stones or Bob Dylan played the American Music Awards a month earlier, they wouldn’t be booked on the Grammys (Pop Eye, Feb. 22)?
If so, it isn’t these acts that should be barred from the awards, its Greene!
