* ABOUT BRAZIL: History gives the Brazilians the upper hand. They have won 37 of the 53 games between the countries. The shock of the last-minute loss to Norway might also have awoken them. Aldair returns to link up with Junior Baiano in the center of the defense and Cesar Sampaio is back from his one-match ban to partner with Dunga in midfield. Bebeto, however, has a leg injury that might sideline him. “It will be a difficult game,†Coach Mario Zagallo said.
* ABOUT CHILE: With Marcelo Salas scoring three goals, the Chileans have reached the second round for the first time since 1962, when they lost in the semifinals--to Brazil. Salas needs one more goal to become Chile’s all-time leading scorer. Striker partner Ivan Zamorano has other motivation. “Ronaldo [Brazil’s striker] told me before the World Cup that Chile wouldn’t make it past the first round,†he said. “My dream is to play Brazil, win the match and then exchange jerseys with Ronaldo.†Defender Javier Margas is dyeing his hair red for the game.
* OUTLOOK: There is the mouthwatering prospect of seeing Ronaldo go head to head with Salas and Zamorano in a game where neither defense is especially sound. Goals could be plentiful. “I think it will be the best match of the World Cup,†said Chile’s coach, Nelson Acosta. “Everybody knows Brazil is a great team that is capable of winning a fifth World Cup. But win, lose or draw, we will make it hard for them.â€
