Ask ‘Not’ What U.S. Soccer Can Do for You
Both Steve Sampson and Alan Rothenberg have the same defiant answer for the U.S. soccer debacle at the World Cup. “I would not have done anything differently,†they both said. This is precisely why they both need to be immediately sacked. As for doing things differently, how about:
* Not dismantling the defense that took Bora several years to build;
* Not rudely dismissing captain John Harkes six weeks before playing Germany;
* Not installing a ridiculous new formation (3-6-1) one month before the Cup.
* Not making a mockery of “team spirit and unity†and American citizenship with the Regis affair.

Inches lower. Inches to the left. Raise the crossbar a bit and the United States might have won.
Can you say, “The Iranian team was far superior

Grahame Jones writing that Iran’s goalkeeper should have “run over and thanked the woodwork†after the U.S. lost to Iran is like saying Michael Jordan should have thanked the rim after the Bulls defeated Utah.
