10 O.C. Cities to Share $31 Million From HUD
The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Friday that 10 cities in Orange County will receive a total of $31 million for community development programs.
Santa Ana will get $11.4 million, Anaheim $6.3 million, Garden Grove $3.4 million, Fullerton $2.2 million, Costa Mesa $1.9 million, Orange $1.8 million, Westminster $1.7 million, Irvine $1.1 million, Tustin $708,000 and Fountain Valley $433,000.
The government will give out more than $4 billion this year in Community Development Block Grants to cities, counties and states.
Orange County cities have been receiving such funds for years for a variety of projects.
Costa Mesa, for example, expects to use 35% to 40% of the money it will receive, along with city funds, to build a community center downtown. The rest of the money will go to nonprofit groups that do things such as work with the homeless and youths, organize neighborhood cleanups and rehabilitate apartments and homes for low- to moderate-income families.
The city also aims to set up a first-time home buyers program, an attempt to increase home ownership in the community, City Manager Allan L. Roeder said.
