City Budget Barely Budges at $9 Million
The $9-million city budget for the fiscal year starting July 1 will keep spending near current levels with a temporary freeze on hiring and new programs.
City Council members this week approved the fiscal 1999 budget, which increases spending 0.3% over the current fiscal year.
Key projects funded in Los Alamitos next year include restrooms at Laurel and Cottonwood parks and planning for the McAuliffe sports complex, which would be built jointly with the Los Alamitos Unified School District. Repairs to Bloomfield Street and Katella Avenue also can begin once grant money arrives.
City officials kept spending at the status quo in part because of a state proposal to reduce car registration taxes, a main source of funding for local governments, Mayor Ronald Bates said.
The Legislature will consider cutting the car tax during budget negotiations this summer.
