First Davis-Lungren Debate Scheduled July 30
The first of five debates between the two major candidates for governor, Democratic Lt. Gov. Gray Davis and Republican Atty. Gen. Dan Lungren, will be held July 30 in San Diego, negotiators for the two candidates agreed Thursday.
A second confrontation will follow Aug. 18 in Fresno, according to Davis campaign manager Garry South and Lungren campaign manager David Puglia.
The candidates had agreed in principle to hold five debates between the primary election in June and the general election in November. The last three debates will be held in September and October, most likely in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento, the two campaign officials said.
The San Diego debate, to be held at the Hotel Del Coronado, will be sponsored by the California Manufacturers Assn. and the California Labor Federation. No sponsor has been named for the Fresno debate.
The formats for the first two debates will be largely traditional, with opening and closing statements from the candidates bracketing questions from a panel of reporters. However, each also will feature a segment during which the candidates question each other.
