Charter Reform Panel to Focus on Education
The Los Angeles Elected Charter Reform Commission will hold a special public meeting Monday at Ritchie Valens Recreation Center to talk with residents about reforming city government.
The focus of the meeting will be the Los Angeles Unified School District and what changes can be made to improve education in the city, said Marcos Castaneda, an elected commissioner from District 7 and an aide to Councilman Richard Alatorre.
Part of a citywide series, the meeting Monday will afford residents attending the opportunity to speak. “All meetings are like that,†Castaneda said. “The public at this meeting will be able to talk about anything to do with charter reform.â€
The goal of reform and the commission is to propose a new city charter and place it on the ballot in the spring of 1999 for consideration by city residents.
Issues of concern include redrawing or increasing the city’s 15 council districts as well as how to best represent neighborhoods and ethnic groups in government.
Castaneda said that on Monday, the commission will begin to address whether the number of school board members should be increased or decreased, whether the salaries of board members should change and whether board members should work as full- or part-time employees.
The meeting will start at 6 p.m. Ritchie Valens Recreation Center is at 10736 Laurel Canyon Blvd. For more information, call (213) 349-0661.
