Long Beach Symphony Sets Season at Terrace

Conducting her 10th season as music director of the Long Beach Symphony, JoAnn Falletta will conduct six of the orchestra’s seven concerts in Terrace Theater at the Long Beach Convention Center, Oct. 17-June 12. Guest conductor Zuohuang Chen will lead one concert.
The programs and their dates:
Oct. 17: Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes of Carl Maria von Weber (Hindemith ); Piano Concerto (Andre Previn), soloist, Horacio Gutierrez; “Death and Transfiguration”; Dance of the Seven Veils, from “Salome” (R. Strauss).
Nov. 21: Huapango (Moncayo); Ballet Suite, “Estancia” (Ginastera); “The Night of the Mayas” (Revueltas); “Bolero” (Ravel). Soloists: Maria Marine and Lorenzo; Angelita and Friends.
Jan. 16: “Celebration” (Byong-kon Kim); Piano Concerto No. 2 (Brahms), soloist, Misha Dichter; “Cinderella” (Prokofiev).
Feb. 27: Overture, “Le Corsaire” (Berlioz); Violin Concerto (Miklos Rozsa), soloist, Robert McDuffie; Symphony No. 5 (Tchaikovsky).
March 27: Bacchanale (Saint-Saens); Schelomo (Bloch), soloist, John Walz; Dances (Rathaus); Symphonic Dances from “West Side Story” (L. Bernstein).
May 1: Symphony No. 1, “Lake Voices” (Margaret Brouwer), West Coast premiere; Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini (Rachmaninoff), soloist, Robert Thies; conductor Zuohuang Chen.
June 12: Violin Concerto (Korngold), soloist, Miranda Cuckson; Symphony No. 4, “Romantic” (Bruckner).
