Polygraph Goes Off the Charts

Long Beach Poly, which won the boys’ state high school track and field championship and was co-winner of the girls’ state title, became the first school to win three state championships in a school year.

The Jackrabbits, who also won the boys’ cross-country title, topped the record of two state championships set by Stockton High in basketball and swimming in 1921-22.

That record was tied 13 times.

Long Beach Poly has won seven boys’ and five girls’ state track championships and has won a record-tying 16 state titles overall.

Berkeley High also has 16 state championships.

Angela Williams of Chino, who won the 100 and 200 meters and long jump at the state championships on Saturday, will compete in the USA Track & Field Junior championships at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville on June 26-27.

The meet will determine the U.S. team for the World Junior championships in Annecy, France, from July 28-Aug. 2.

Shakedia Jones of UCLA placed second in the 100 and third in the 200 in the NCAA championships at the University of Buffalo (N.Y.) on Saturday, helping UCLA to a second-place finish behind Texas.

With career bests of 11.11 seconds in the 100 and 22.84 in the 200, Jones should be a good match for Williams, who has run 11.14 and 23.02.

Williams probably won’t run in the 200 on June 27, however, unless she fails to finish among the top two in the 100 on June 26.

By winning the 100, 200 and long jump in the state meet, Williams became one of four girls to win three individual state titles in the same year.

The others are Wendy Brown, who won the high jump, long jump and triple jump for Woodside in 1984, Janeene Vickers, who won took the 100, 100 low hurdles and 300 low hurdles for Pomona in ‘87, and Marion Jones, who won placed first in the 100, 200 and long jump for Thousand Oaks in ’93.

Stephanie Brown of Arroyo Grande won the girls’ shotput and discus in the state meet, to become the third athlete to achieve that double. The others were Natalie Kaaiawahia of Fullerton in 1981 and ‘83, and Melissa Weis of Bakersfield in ’89.
