Renowned Math Teacher Escalante Plans to Retire From Classroom

SACRAMENTO — A teacher whose ability to turn inner-city teenagers into math whizzes was captured in the 1988 film “Stand and Deliver” says he plans to retire from the classroom.
Jaime Escalante, 66, has been delivering math and life lessons in recent years at Hiram Johnson High School in east Sacramento, although he gained fame while teaching at Garfield High School in East Los Angeles. After 35 years in the classroom, Escalante says he wants to spend more time training teachers and pursuing other educational opportunities.
“It’s time to dedicate more time to my family,” he said. “And it’s time to step aside and give a chance to other teachers.”
