Mohr Is Selected as Cypress Coach
Margaret Mohr has been named the women’s basketball coach at Cypress College, athletic director Diane Henry said Thursday.
Mohr, who was the girls’ basketball coach at Long Beach Wilson the past six seasons, takes over for Kevin Kiernan, who resigned in late February. Kiernan also coaches at Troy High.
Mohr had an 80-63 record at Wilson and led the team to a Southern Section final last season. Her teams also won two league titles.
Mohr, a graduate of Long Beach State, helped the 49ers to the Final Four in 1987. She was also an assistant at Long Beach, where she also received her master’s degree.

Chapman softball player Stephanie Carew has been selected to the GTE Academic All-American team, the school announced Thursday. Carew helped the Panthers reach the Division III national championship game.
Carew, a junior majoring in business administration, was a second-team college division selection after hitting .472 with 14 home runs. She has a 3.59 grade-point average.
Margaret Hollis, a sophomore catcher at Michigan State and former Mater Dei player, was a second-team university division selection. Hollis, a microbiology major, has a 3.98 grade-point average. Hollis hit .325 with 27 RBIs.

Leslie Williams, a sophomore shortstop and catcher for the Pacific Christian College softball team, was selected a National Christian College Athletic Assn. first-team All-American for the second consecutive year.
Williams hit .400 with eight home runs, 38 runs batted in and 36 runs scored in 40 games.
Teammate Kristin Phillips, a senior second baseman, was named an NCCAA All-American Scholar Athlete for the second consecutive season. She received similar honors from the NAIA this year.
Phillips graduated with a degree in social science and a 3.78 GPA. She hit .295 with 29 runs scored and 13 stolen bases.

Aaron McAthy of Huntington Beach has signed a letter of intent to play soccer at UC Irvine, Coach Shawn Bruckler said Thursday. McAthy scored 19 goals and had 11 assists last season and has a career record 49 goals at Huntington Beach.
McAthy, an All-Sunset League first-team pick, made the Times All-County second team for the second year in a row.

Capistrano Valley’s Vanessa La Torre will play softball at Concordia next year, Coach Joe LaMasa said Thursday. La Torre is a three-year starter at first and third base for the Cougars, and has hit better than .300 for her career.

Former Orange High and Santa Ana College soccer player Paul Lopez will play at Chapman, his club coach, Carlos Valdes, said. Lopez graduated from Orange in 1993 and played at Santa Ana in 1994.
