Byte Hiatus
The new owner of Byte, a magazine that has followed the computer industry for nearly two decades, said Friday the publication would go on a summer vacation and relaunch with a new look this fall.
On the same day that CMP Media completed its $28.6-million acquisition of McGraw-Hill Cos.’ technology publications, Kenneth Cron, CMP’s chief of publishing, reported that the Manhasset, N.Y., company is excited about Byte’s prospects.
CMP’s commitment to Byte was called into question Thursday, when the company suddenly announced that publication would be suspended the next day. Dave Andrews, Byte’s former news editor, said in a message on his voice mailbox that CMP did not share any information concerning a relaunch with Byte’s staff.
The July issue of Byte will be sent to subscribers and to newsstands, Andrews said. CMP said it would maintain Byte’s archives at its Web site (https://www.byte.com).
