Tight End Seidman Has Knee Surgery, Won’t Miss Practice

Westlake High tight end Mike Seidman, a preseason All-American, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee last week for a torn meniscus.

Seidman said he should be back at full strength by the time Westlake begins fall practice Aug. 24.

BASEBALL

The Southern California Quakes, a 14-and-under youth team, will compete for an AAU national championship this weekend in Charlotte, N.C. Among the team’s top players are Greg Acheatel, Steve Moss, D.J. Milonas and Jesse Michel. Former El Camino Real pitcher Kevin Szymanski is coaching the team.

GOLF

Cheryl Musser of West Hills shot four-over-par 75 Tuesday at Palos Verdes Golf Club to lead a group of five local players who qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship.

Anne Lee of Northridge shot 76, and Linda Chen-Olsen of Granada Hills, Linda Ishii of Westlake Village and Jenny Glasgow of Pepperdine each shot 77.

The U.S. Women’s Amateur is Aug. 11-16 at Barton Hills Country Club in Ann Arbor, Mich.

WATER POLO

Katie Pyle, a senior at Louisville High, and former Louisville player Kim Feig are members of the U.S. 20-and-under junior national team that will compete in Maryland. They will participate in the 18-and-under Junior Olympics for women in Florida.

CYCLING

David Clinger of Woodland Hills is in first place of the Tour De ‘Toona cycling race in Altoona, Pa., after racing the three-mile prologue stage Tuesday in five minutes, 10 seconds.

Thurlow Rogers of Van Nuys is in 14th place, 16 seconds behind Clinger. Both represent the Valley-based Mercury racing team.

The six-stage Tour De ‘Toona runs through Sunday.

WRESTLING

The Moorpark College All-American Wrestling Clinic is scheduled for Aug. 8.

The clinic is open to all levels, elementary through high school. Instruction will be by Moorpark Coach Paul Keysaw, who coached the Raiders to the state title last season and was the Western State Conference coach of the year in 1996 and ’97.
