PORT HUENEME — The city experienced its first bank heist of the year Monday when a lone bandit stole an undisclosed amount of cash from California Federal Bank on Channel Islands Boulevard, authorities said.
No one was injured in the 2:30 p.m. robbery at a branch office at 739 W. Channel Islands Blvd., said Sgt. Jerry Beck of the Port Hueneme Police Department.
The robbery occurred when a man who appeared to be in his twenties gave a teller a note demanding cash and indicating that he had a gun.
The teller followed the robber’s instructions, and he fled on foot, Beck said.
Police and FBI agents searched the area for about two hours and at one point took a man into custody who matched the robber’s description, Beck said. That man was released after witnesses confirmed he was not the robber.
The robber was wearing a black baseball cap turned backward and a light-colored T-shirt, and he carried a backpack, Beck said.
Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call Port Hueneme police at 986-6534, the FBI at 642-3995 or Crime Stoppers at 986-TALK.
