Council Tightens Law Regulating Gun Shops

The City Council has approved an ordinance tightening restrictions on the sale of ammunition and requiring local gun shops to check whether their employees have criminal records.

The ordinance prohibits the city’s seven gun shops from selling multiple-round ammunition magazines and from selling ammunition to those forbidden to own guns because of a criminal background.

The law also requires gun shops to log names, addresses, birth dates and other information about customers who purchase ammunition.

The legislation mirrors firearm policy recently enacted by the city of Los Angeles, said Leah Archibald, deputy to Councilman Paul Koretz, who authored the ordinance.
