Rebels, Government Agree to Cease-Fire

Army rebels and the Guinea Bissau government agreed to a cease-fire after 50 days of devastating civil war and promised to open formal peace negotiations within eight days. Ministers and officials from six fellow Portuguese-speaking countries mediated the deal, which will include deployment of an international force. There is no timetable for the troops’ arrival.
