From Magic to Make-Overs

Following is a sampling of enrichment classes and one-day seminars being offered in Ventura County.
Offered by Moorpark College, 378-1400:
* Astronomy: Learn about planets, stars, galaxies, deep space and cosmology. Five on-campus meetings are required for this fall semester course, which begins Aug. 21. Other classes will be broadcast on a local television channel. The fee for the three-unit course is $39, plus about $60 worth of books.
Offered by Ventura College, 654-6459:
* Advanced Sailing: Enjoy fine-tuning your skills aboard a 30-foot sloop during a course that covers rigging, cruising, problem solving and navigation. The Sunday courses started July 12 and continue through Aug. 16, from 1 to 4 p.m. Classes meet at Marina Park Dock. Fee is $115.
* Beginning Magic: For people 11 and up. Todd Walker, a professional magician, will teach card, coin and rope tricks, sleight-of-hand and more. Students should bring a handkerchief, a 50-cent piece and a deck of cards. Topics include close-up, stage and children’s magic, misdirection, skill and gimmick tricks. The workshop will be held at the Barranca Vista Center on Aug. 2 from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. The cost is $22.
* Glass Beads: Learn how to make glass beads in the style of ancient Egyptians. Course will be offered at Glass Tattoo, 4587 Telephone Road, on Tuesdays from Aug. 4-18, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Fee is $85.
* Knit a Sweater for Baby: Materials will be provided. Course will be offered at the college’s Administrative Conference Room, Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., July 14 to July 28.
* Self-Help Acupressure: Learn how to relieve everyday aches and pains, stress and tension by stimulating pressure points on your body. Seminar will be held Aug 4. from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Ventura College, Room TR-5. The cost is $39 plus $20 for a workbook.
* Beauty Make-Over Over 40: Learn how to be your own makeup artist. Seminar will be offered Aug. 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ventura College, Room TR-7. The fee is $35.
Offered by the city of Ventura’s Community Services Department, 658-4726:
* Latin Dance: Learn the slow, sensuous dance of the rumba. Students may take the class with our without a partner. The workshop will be offered Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Barranca Vista Center, 7050 Ralston St. in Ventura. The cost is $15 per person.
