“From the Ashes” (July 11), the story of Ammie Murray’s work to help rebuild a South Carolina black church destroyed again and again by white bigots touched us deeply. A thousand thanks for giving so much space to a saga showing love triumphing over hate.

* “From the Ashes” was one of the best-written and researched articles I’ve read in a long time. Richard Meyer is to be commended for a most moving and timely piece. Murray and all the others involved with St. John Baptist Church are truly modern-day saints and patriots. Let’s have more Saturday Journals like this one!
