Teen Samaritan Is Stabbed by Suspect in Assault on Girl

A 16-year-old Oxnard boy was stabbed Friday night after he chased a man suspected of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl.

The Oxnard girl was leaving the Skate Palace in the 400 block of Hueneme Road at the end of a skate session about 11 p.m. when a man came up behind her and grabbed her, Oxnard police said.

After the girl ran away, two bystanders chased the suspect to a nearby field, where the 16-year-old was stabbed by the suspect, police said. He was taken to St. John’s Hospital, where he remained in stable condition Saturday.

Leonard Steinberg, assistant manager at the skating rink, said there are always two employees posted outside while children wait for their parents to pick them up. He said about 100 youths were outside Friday night when the incident occurred.

“Normally, we don’t have any problems,” Steinberg said. “But the kids chased him down. They weren’t going to let him do what he did.”

The suspect fled and still has not been arrested. He is described as 25 to 35 years old, 5 feet, 10 inches tall and 220 pounds, with short black hair. He has facial scarring that may have been caused by burns or birthmarks.
