Fire Forces Plane to Land

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — An American Airlines passenger jet landed safely Thursday in Puerto Rico after an engine caught fire in flight, a spokeswoman said. Flight 574, an Airbus 300, was carrying 242 passengers and a crew of nine to Miami. The plane’s left engine caught fire shortly after taking off from San Juan, the spokeswoman said.
She said passengers used evacuation slides, and three or four had minor injuries.
