Panel OKs Design of WWII Monument

The National Capital Planning Commission approved the design concept of a World War II Memorial on the National Mall, saying it “will be in symphonic harmony” with the other memorials in the area. The design now goes to Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt for his consideration. It includes a plaza surrounded by metal-topped granite walls broken on each side by arched entrances. Bronze laurel wreaths representing valor and victory would be suspended from each 36-foot-tall arch.
