‘Near Miss’

Regarding the report of the two planes that came within 20 feet of each other due to spilled coffee in the control tower (“Spilled Java Causes Control Tower Miscue,” June 29), when will The Times finally stop toeing the Federal Aviation Administration line by repeatedly utilizing the agency’s euphemism “near miss”?

It was not a near miss; it was an actual miss. In the name of anti-doublespeak, simple English, please call these incidents what they are: near collisions!
