Bay Area Air

The Times’ June 26 headline declaring the San Francisco Bay Area “like the rest” of California in air quality missed one important point. That region remains the only metropolitan area in California with a statutory exemption from California’s clean air regulations (Smog Check II).

It’s of concern to the Central Valley because prevailing winds blow the Bay Area’s pollution into our area. It should be of concern to all of California because the exemption results in other regions having to pay a higher price in the fight against smog.

When this issue again comes before the state Legislature, The Times would do the entire state a public service by reminding Southern California Assembly members and senators that San Francisco Bay Area motorists should be treated the same as their own constituents.
