Disabled Children

Re “Minutes That Cost an Eternity,” June 28: My wife and I are the parents of a 5-year-old son with severe mental and physical disabilities. The cause of our son’s disabilities is unknown and, as such, he has not been diagnosed. We appreciate the issues faced by parents of children who are disabled as a result of a near-drowning. As in our case, it is very hard on the parents and, obviously, impacts the child’s quality of life.

It is important to note that there are many disabled children and, even with the American With Disabilities Act in place, the children are often “forgotten.” Ask almost any parent. For example, we constantly argue with insurance companies for medically necessary equipment and prescriptions, as well as battle with school districts for appropriate educational services. It is important, despite the cause of the child’s disability, that the child’s medical, social and lifelong needs are acknowledged and addressed.
