Pedestrians
Re “Cross Walkers,” June 30: At rush hour, pedestrians are equally at fault with cars in traffic problems. At an intersection with a crosswalk signal, they do not stop when the signal starts flashing red, turns solid red or when the traffic light turns yellow. They only stop (or run to the other side) when the traffic light turns red. This causes traffic gridlock because cars cannot turn left or right across the endless stream of pedestrians. Crosswalk signals are not there only to protect pedestrians, but to regulate the flow of pedestrians vs. the flow of cars.
When I worked downtown several years ago, this was a serious problem. What a shocker to find out that cars are not the major cause of traffic downtown, but rather pedestrians who disregard the crosswalk signals.
