Cruise Canceled After 430 Fall Ill
Princess Cruise Lines canceled last week’s scheduled Regal Princess voyage to Alaska after hundreds of passengers and crew members fell ill on three cruises in a row. The ship was expected to resume service from Vancouver, Canada, today after a stem-to-stern sanitation procedure.
Julie Benson, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles-based line, said a total of 430 people suffered “very mild diarrhea, nausea and vomiting” on cruises that began June 7, 14 and 21. The cause was unknown; Canadian health authorities and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control were investigating.
In the meantime, the line decided to cancel the June 28 cruise, offer refunds to its 1,600 passengers and then “sanitize every single thing a passenger might touch,” Benson said.
