John McCarty, a student at Grace Lutheran School, has been awarded a $1,000 savings bond and a $5,000 grant for his school for a winning essay.
The contest, sponsored by Ralphs Grocery Co. and Johnson & Johnson, asked students to write about how they would improve their schools with a $5,000 grant.
In his winning essay, McCarty wrote that he would use the money to buy computer equipment, publishing software and cameras to start a school newspaper at the 16018 Waikiki Lane campus.
