Panthers End Winless Streak

John Vanbiesbrouck made all the stops to help the Florida Panthers stop a franchise-worst 10-game winless streak.

“What this win gives us is hope. You don’t want to leave yourself stranded, feeling that you’re hopeless,” said Vanbiesbrouck said after making 31 saves to lead his Panthers to 3-0 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes Tuesday night at Miami.

It was Vanbiesbrouck’s second shutout of the season and the 27th of his career.

The Panthers, coming off an 0-5-3 road trip and an 0-5-5 stretch overall, improved their league-worst home record to 6-13-5.

Florida has won all three of its meetings against the Hurricanes this season.

The loss ended a two-game winning streak for Carolina, losers despite outshooting the Panthers 31-17, including 23-9 over the final two periods.

Boston 6, Ottawa 1--Steve Heinze had a goal and two assists at Boston and Byron Dafoe nearly had his second consecutive shutout against Ottawa. Dafoe had gone more than 127 minutes without allowing a goal to the Senators when Wade Redden scored his third of the season with 8:13 left in the game, spoiling the shutout.

The victory enabled Boston to end a three-game losing streak, all on the road, and extended its home unbeaten streak to six games.

The Senators, on the other hand, are winless in their last five games and dropped to 1-13-4 in franchise history against the Bruins.

Buffalo 3, St. Louis 3--Vaclav Varada scored his first NHL goal with 5:24 remaining in regulation at Buffalo, enabling the Sabres to extend the Blues’ winless streak to seven games.

St. Louis is 0-5-2 during the streak.

The Blues have gone 4-7-2 without Brett Hull, who has been sidelined since Dec. 27 because of a broken left hand. He is expected to be back in the lineup Thursday in St. Louis against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
