West Regional Track Meet Organizers Stepping Down
Bill and Judy Cockerham, the husband and wife team that organized the West regional high school track and field championships from 1980-97, have resigned from their positions as meet directors because of time constraints.
“It had become too time consuming for what we wanted to do with the rest of our lives,” Bill Cockerham said. “It had started to cut into our family time and our jobs. We loved putting [the West regional] on. It’s a great meet, but it just got to be too much for us.”
Without the Cockerhams, the West regional could be moved from Woodward Park in Fresno to a venue in Southern California such as Mt. San Antonio College or Balboa Park in San Diego, although nothing has been decided.
More than 2,600 high school runners competed in the 1997 West regional, which was held Dec. 6.
BASEBALL
Changing places: Former Chatsworth High All-City third baseman Danny Phillips has left Cal State Fullerton and transferred to Pierce College. Phillips is a sophomore in eligibility.
BASKETBALL
Injury: Forward Megan Hankins of Flintridge Sacred Heart probably will not play in a Mission League game Friday against Chaminade after suffering possible torn ligaments in her right knee.
Hankins, averaging 10.2 points and 9.3 rebounds, was injured Saturday against La Salle. She sat out the Tologs’ victory over Hillcrest Christian on Tuesday.
