Brea Olinda Coach Finally Beats Mater Dei

There’s no disputing the success of the Brea Olinda girls’ basketball team since Coach Jeff Sink arrived after the Ladycats were named national champions in the 1993-94 season. Since then, the program has gone 105-12 and won three Southern Section championships. But he had never beaten Mater Dei.

In a season he hopes will culminate in the school’s first state championship under his direction after winning five in six years, Sink breathed a big sigh of relief after Saturday’s 70-45 victory over Mater Dei.

“Monkeys travel in troops,” Sink said. “One has been removed from my back, but most are still there. I hope to remove them all this year.”

The Ladycats are ranked No. 1 in the state--same as last year when they were upset by the Monarchs.

The city of Laguna Hills has moved the ceremony honoring Laguna Hills’ championship football team from tonight to Feb. 10 because of a conflict with final exams, according to city clerk Mary Carlson.

El Dorado’s wrestlers finished sixth in the 44-team California Invitational Tournament at Morro Bay High over the weekend. The Golden Hawks, ranked sixth in Division II in the Southern Section, were the only county team to compete.

“We go there instead of the Five Counties Tournament--which is definitely a tougher tournament than the TIC,” said Jeff Hickok, coach at El Dorado. “It’s good experience for CIF--a good gut check. The competition was similar to what our CIF will be like.”

Matt McRae took fourth at 171 pounds, and Matt Burnham was fifth at 132, and Mike Curtis was sixth at 217.

The Olympic League’s wrestling duals, which were to be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Calvary Chapel, have been moved to the Warrior Center, 6125 Chip Ave., Cypress.

The duals, which will be hosted by Brethren Christian, were moved because of a scheduling conflict, Calvary Chapel Athletic Director Joe Walters said.

Corona del Mar has named Robert Wiebort its softball coach and Norma Veal its badminton coach.

Veal is a former girls’ tennis coach at South Torrance High and Harbor Community College in Wilmington.

Wiebort coached the 14-and-under Southern California Outlaws for two years and was head coach of the 16-and-under Southern California Fear for two years.
