Rodriguez Pulls One Out for Valley in Nick of Time

Maricella Rodriguez scored 16 points, including the game-winning basket with three seconds to play, and the Valley College women’s basketball team escaped with a 60-59 victory over Santa Monica in a Western State Conference South Division game Saturday at Valley.
Valley (14-9, 2-1 in division play) trailed, 59-58, when the Monarchs got the ball after a traveling call against Santa Monica (7-13, 1-1) with seven seconds to go.
The Monarchs led, 55-37, before Santa Monica went on a 22-5 run in the final 10 minutes.
Santa Monica’s 59-58 edge in the closing seconds was the Corsairs’ only lead.
Rodriguez grabbed 10 rebounds and Tanya McLaughlin had a team-high 17 points for Valley.
Akia Morris led Santa Monica with 18 points.
In other women’s basketball games:
Ventura 85, Santa Barbara 32--Kelly Tobin had 15 points for host Ventura in a WSC North Division game.
Amirah Leonard had 13 points for Ventura (24-1, 2-0). April Kozar had 11 points and Lynda Amari had 10 points and 10 steals.
The Pirates won their 21st consecutive game.
Canyons 91, Bakersfield 58--Laura Tweedy scored 25 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and had eight blocked shots for Canyons in a WSC South Division game at Bakersfield.
Gohar Tumanian scored 20 points for Canyons (17-7, 3-0 in division play).
Moorpark 85, Oxnard 28--Janim Halsey scored 21 points and Christina Mosesso had 13 for host Moorpark in a WSC North Division game.
Antelope Valley 67, Cerro Coso 56--Ebony Davis scored 14 points and Kristin Phillips had 12 for Antelope Valley in a Foothill Conference game at Cerro Coso.
Talaya McDaniel had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Antelope Valley (11-11, 6-2 in conference play).
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Glendale 75, West L.A. 65--Will Ruffin had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Tony Hoggatts had 16 points, nine rebounds and eight assists for host Glendale (11-10, 1-1) in a WSC South Division game.
Glendale’s Donald Holt scored 16 points and Juan Corleto scored 12.
Moorpark 105, Oxnard 72--Anthony McCurtis scored 24 points and Ceneka Shaw had 23 for host Moorpark (10-9, 2-0) in a WSC North Division game.
The Master’s 78, UC Santa Cruz 63--Chad Bell had 20 points and 10 rebounds for host Master’s in a nonconference game.
Jeremiah Cathey had 16 points for the Mustangs (16-7).
Cal Lutheran 87, Occidental 67--Mike Dulaney scored 17 points for Cal Lutheran (7-8, 3-1) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Occidental.
MEN’S TENNIS
Pepperdine 5, Southern Methodist 2--Kelly Gullett won at No. 5 singles and teamed with Robert Lindstedt for a victory at No. 1 doubles to pace host Pepperdine (5-0) in a nonconference match.
