Ray’s Drought Ends but Not Tampa Bay’s
Rob Ray had gone 359 days without a goal.
It seems Tampa Bay has gone that long without a win.
“Who’s counting?†Ray said after his goal helped the Sabres to a 4-1 win over Tampa Bay in Buffalo on Friday night. “I’m not here for my goal-scoring ability. If I thought I was, I would have been gone a long time ago. It’s nice to chip in every once in a while. I wish it wasn’t so far between the goals.â€
Matthew Barnaby and Michal Grosek each had a goal and an assist, and goaltender Dominik Hasek made 35 saves for the Sabres. Darryl Shannon scored with less than one second to play.
Defenseman Bryan Marchment scored the only goal for the Lightning, who haven’t won in 1998, going 0-8-1 since Jan. 1.
Ray, known more for his fists than his scoring punch, gave Buffalo a 2-1 lead late in the first period, and the Sabres cruised through the final 40 minutes in earning their fourth win in five games.
San Jose 3, Edmonton 2--Murray Craven scored with 7:16 to play and the Sharks came back from a two-goal deficit to win at San Jose.
Shark goaltender Mike Vernon stopped the final 19 shots he faced, and John MacLean and Patrick Marleau scored the first two goals for San Jose, which extended its undefeated streak to three games.
Dean McAmmond and Bill Guerin scored for the Oilers, who saw a six-game winning streak halted.
The Sharks won for just the second time this season when trailing after the first period.
