THE SEQUENCE OF EVENTS: This Year

Jan 7, 1998: Monica S. Lewinsky swears in an affifdavit that she did not have an affair with Clinton.

Jan. 12: Linda Tripp contacts Whitewater Independent Counsel Kenneth W. Starr to tell him of tapes she has made.

Jan. 13: Outfitted with a microphone at Starr’s request, Tripp meets Lewinsky at the Ritz-Carlton in Pentagon City, across the Potomac River from Washinton, and allegedly discuss the affair.

Jan. 16, 1998: Starr expands probe of Clinton land dealings to include Lewinsky case, and allegations that the president had a sexual relationship with Lewinsky, then pressured her to lie about it.

Jan. 17: Clinton testifies under oath in a videotaped deposition that he did not have a sexual relationship with Lewinsky.

Jan. 20: Existence of Tripp tapes becomes public.

Jan. 21, 1998: In interviews, Clinton again denies having a sexual relationship with Lewinsky or pressuring her to lie about it. The cosmetics company Revlon discloses that Jordan, a member of the company’s board, referred Lewinsky for a public affairs job in New York. She is offered a job, though the company has now withdrawn the offer.

Jan 22, 1998: Jordan confirms that he referred Lewinsky to a Washington attorney who could represent her in the Jones case. While driving her to meet the lawyer, Jordan says, Lewinsky told him she did not have a sexual relationship with Clinton. Jordan denies suggesting that she lie in the Jones case. Lewinsky’s deposition, scheduled for today, is postponed.
