Ulster Defense Unit Blamed in 3 Killings

The biggest pro-British paramilitary group in the province is responsible for slaying at least three Roman Catholics, the province’s police chief declared. Chief Constable Ronnie Flanagan said police had “no doubt†that members of the outlawed Ulster Defense Assn. carried out at least three lethal attacks on Catholics since New Year’s Eve, when gunmen raked a north Belfast pub, killing one man and wounding five. Flanagan suggested that the guns used in that attack and in killings this week had been used in previous attacks by the group.
