Council Will Discuss Consulting Contract
Responding to demands by Irvine Mayor Christina L. Shea, the City Council next week will discuss its consulting contract with former county Supervisor Don Saltarelli.
Newport Beach officials have disputed contentions that Saltarelli was hired to thwart Irvine’s attempts to annex the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.
If Irvine annexes El Toro, it will be in charge of planning future uses for the base, which closes in mid-1999.
Irvine opposes a county proposal to build a commercial airport on the base. Newport Beach favors the idea.
According to Newport Beach officials, Saltarelli was hired as a consultant to study all airport issues, as well as some county issues.
The council meets Monday at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 3300 W. Newport Blvd. Information: (714) 644-3309.
