LAPD Cites 30 Students in Crackdown on Truancy
More than 30 students were cited and returned to school during a two-day truancy sweep conducted by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Harbor Division on Wednesday and Thursday as part of a zero-tolerance anti-truancy crackdown that began earlier this month.
The department’s Special Problems Unit dedicated three patrol cars to combing the streets around the high schools located in San Pedro and Wilmington. The students were cited for truancy and ordered to appear in court with a parent or a guardian, where they will face fines of up to $700 and then returned their schools.
“Word on the street is that we’re out there and we’re taking them back to class,†said Det. Richard Simmons. “Kids can learn only when they are school and that’s where we want them to be.â€
