Mayor Barbara Messina announced Wednesday that she is entering the race in the 49th Assembly District, which encompasses her city and a handful of surrounding communities.
Messina, 57, a Democrat, is serving her third term as mayor and is known for her lobbying efforts in Washington and Sacramento to get the proposed Long Beach Freeway extension built--a project she says will reduce traffic through her city.
Other candidates vying for the Democratic nomination for the seat, now held by Diane Martinez (D-Monterey Park), include Martinez’s sister, Susan, and Monterey Park City Councilwoman Judy Chu.
