School District Voices Its Opposition to Airport

The Irvine Unified School District has taken a formal stand against a proposed commercial airport at El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.
Board members, saying that airports generally make bad neighbors for schools, passed a resolution stating their opposition and urging the adoption of reuse alternatives. The Marines are scheduled to depart from the base by July, 1999.
“The studies that have shown that there will no negative impact of students must be flawed,” board member Margie Wakeham said. “This resolution is the right thing to do.”
The district serves more than 23,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade at 31 campuses.
Board members said they wished they had taken a formal stance earlier but had been studying the El Toro issue for some time.
