UCLA Unable to Stop Stanford at Foul Line

UCLA took advantage of poor field-goal shooting by No. 11-ranked Stanford to make it a close game, but couldn’t stop the Cardinal at the foul line and lost, 75-70, Sunday before a regular-season record crowd of 5,662 at Pauley Pavilion.

The Cardinal, 8-5 overall and 5-1 in Pacific 10, beat the Bruins (9-6, 4-2) only after making its last 14 free throws.

With 30 seconds left, Stanford’s Milena Flores made two free throws to give the Cardinal a 73-68 lead. UCLA guard Tawana Grimes’ layup narrowed the gap to 73-70 before two more free throws by Nygaard with three seconds clinched the outcome.

Stanford led, 44-33, with 18:31 to play before UCLA rallied. The Bruins took a 59-57 lead on a three-point shot by Melanie Pearson with 6:16 remaining, but it would be their only lead of the second half.

Both teams shot dismally from the field. Stanford made only 37.5% of its shots and UCLA 40.6%.

Vanessa Nygaard scored 22 points and Kristin Folkl added 20 for Stanford. Maylana Martin led UCLA with 17 points, and Erica Gomez added 15.

The crowd surpassed the previous regular-season record of 5,512, set against Stanford on Feb. 11, 1996.

USC 59, California 50--Only 757 turned out at the Lyon Center to see the Trojans (7-8, 2-4) beat the Bears (5-10, 1-4) to end a four-game losing streak.

Adrain Williams had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Trojans, who shot only 32.8% but had only 11 turnovers compared to 27 for Cal. USC guard Kristin Clark had 17 points, six assists and five steals.
