Race Irrelevant for Oxnard Post
The position of Oxnard city manager should be considered solely on the experience and ability of the candidate, not on race.
From The Times, Jan. 9: “Latino leaders in Oxnard on Thursday continued to express happiness that the City Council members picked a Latino city manager. Edmund Sotelo is of Mexican descent.â€
I wonder what the community would say if the quote had been: “The Anglo leaders in Oxnard continued to express happiness that the City Council members picked an Anglo city manager.â€
Race should not enter into it at all, and should not be referred to when choosing a city manager or filling any other government position. We are Americans first, and to make this a racial issue is unfortunate and leaves the impression that racism is alive and well in Oxnard.
I wish Sotelo well in the city manager position and I hope that he will do a wonderful job for all the citizens of Oxnard.
