2 Seriously Injured in Freeway Collision
LA CONCHITA — Two women were being treated for serious injuries Sunday night after their cars collided head-on on U.S. 101 north of Ventura.
Names of the injured were not available, but authorities said the victims, the sole occupants of their cars, were transported by American Medical Response ambulance to Saint Francis Medical Center in Santa Barbara.
One woman sustained serious injuries to her face and head, and the other suffered trauma to her chest, including lung damage, paramedics said.
The collision was the first of two accidents on the northbound side of the freeway near La Conchita on Sunday night, according to the Highway Patrol. It occurred at 7 p.m. at Santa Barbara Avenue. Both drivers were trapped inside their cars for about 20 minutes and had to be extricated, authorities said.
The second crash occurred at 7:31 p.m. at Sea Cliff, about half a mile south of the first accident.
Firefighters from both Ventura and Santa Barbara counties responded to the accidents.
Traffic on both sides of the freeway was at a crawl for some time while rescue crews worked to free the victims and clear the road.
The causes of both crashes are under investigation.
