Grant to Aid Campus Child-Care Center

Ventura College’s child-care center has become the latest beneficiary of welfare reform.
The facility has received a federal grant of nearly $135,000 to expand so it can deal with an expected influx of children whose parents, who receive welfare benefits, attend classes at the college.
“If people don’t have child care, they can’t go to class and they can’t get [job] training,” center director Robin Douglas said.
The $134,753 grant will allow the campus’ child-care facility to buy a new 1,440-square-foot modular building, increasing enrollment by about 24 children, she said. About 80 children are now enrolled at the center.
The new building should be ready by mid-spring.
Moorpark and Oxnard colleges have received similar grants allowing for the expansion of their respective centers.
