Officials Mark Anniversary of Freeway Overpass Collapse

City, state and federal officials gathered Friday at the base of a Santa Monica Freeway overpass that collapsed during the Northridge earthquake to mark the fourth anniversary of the temblor and recall the havoc it wrought.
Over the din of freeway and surface street noise, Councilman Nate Holden told the gathering of about 30 people he wanted to “salute all of you for your courage, your patience during the difficult months” after the earthquake.
Holden said a bronze plaque to mark the spot will read: “On Jan. 17, 1994, at 4:31 a.m., a 6.8 magnitude earthquake caused tremendous pain in this community.”
Although seismologists initially pegged the quake as magnitude 6.8, it has since been downgraded to 6.7.
