Thousands of cans of Coca-Cola are being recalled because of possible ammonia contamination, health officials said Thursday.

Shirley Vargas of the state Health Department’s food protection program said the local bottler had discovered a leak in refrigeration equipment used to add carbonation to the drink that allowed ammonia to leak into some cans.

She said a “couple hundred cases” of 12-ounce cans of caffeine-free Coke Classic were involved but the bottler is recalling an entire hour’s worth of production to be safe. The soft drinks involved were distributed only in Indianapolis.
